Addis to Minneapolis…
Born in Addis Ababa Ethiopia, Ethiopian MC iMajik started tinkering with the idea of Hip Hop at the age of 16 in his then high school “School of Tomorrow” Encouraged by his best friend Helmie, he performed in front of his 11th grade classroom and then in front of the whole school at an annual family program. He then recorded his first mixtape at the age of 17. Even though the sound quality showed much to be desired, there was early signs of genius in it!
After moving to the United States in Jan of 2003, iMajik focused on understanding his new surroundings and reignited his love of writing and recording when he got to college at Saint Cloud State University in St. Cloud MN. Joining forces with Teddy A, they formed the group ETHIOVOICE which was a hit at the local talent show performances and got to perform at the 2005 homecoming coronation processions. After that, iMajik switched his interest to DJing. After he dominated all the house parties in his college town, he started to DJ at clubs and then hosting his own event “Yemeshet Chewata” in Minneapolis with his partners Ferezer, Henok and Haylat. Meanwhile he also created “Super Smash Entertainment” with Eden, Selam, Lidiya, Lisa, Orlando and Lawrence. The group went on to win an online songwriting contest for their incredible uplifting joint “Love is in the air” which went on to be used by Western Union in their ad campaign! Super smash went on to release their self titled mixtape in 2010 with unforgettable jams such as “Chilling and Relaxing” and Selam’s melancholy ballad “One last time”
In 2010, while working with Supersmash, iMajik realized that he had a knack for rapping in his native language of Amharic and was quite good at it. He released the song “YOU HABESHA?” Which was mostly in English but had a verse in Amharic that was received very well by fans and haters alike. While he was in Ocean City, Maryland in the summer of 2011, he got the bright idea to make a mixtape that exhibits his newfound skills in Ethiopian Hip Hop. After moving back to MN and honing his craft, he release his first full mixtape “hulgize Andegna” in June of 2013. The title track ended up being a stand out and was a hit in local Ethiopian circles. Deciding to retool his skills yet again- iMajik released Version 2 of the Hugize Andegna mixtape in August of 2016 with a promotional music video for “Hoya Hoye”- a twist on a traditional holiday track that was highly celebrated by fans. This was iMajik’s first music video and it ended up having above 35K views on YouTube.
After this, iMajik took a hiatus to refocus on his life and get his paper right. While still DJing events around Minneapolis and also cofounding a new incredible venture “IBEX INTERNATIONAL GROUP” with his partners Haylat, Ferezer and Teddy! Ibex was dominant in the Habesha entertainment scene of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Hosting 4 staple events a year and becoming known for their super fun outings. When the pandemic hit, iMajik decided it was time for the world to hear a full fledge album from him and got to work.
As of May 2023, iMajik has released his debut album Addis to Minneapolis- on July 30th 2021! He said he feels like he’s been working on it his whole life but at the minimum since the summer of 2011 in Maryland! He quickly followed that up with SITOTA- an EP released in the Christmas of 2021. After that- he released his 2nd album- GUZO in the summer of 2022. Now he prepares to release more music and promote himself to the audience. He would like to thank all his family and friends for all the love and support as it would not be possible to get here without their help. He would also like to thank himself for believing in himself and doing the work needed. He also wanted to thank himself for never quitting and believing it can be done and finally getting to release the album.
